The Shanghai Customs Office, in compliance with the principles set out in 《Agreement on Intellectual Property Related to Trade》and strictly in accordance with 《Customs Law》and 《Rules on Customs?Protection of Intellectual Property Right》,cracks down sternly on the flow of counterfeit and pirated products through the import and export channels. By 2005, an accumulative total of 961 right infringement cases of various categories were discovered with the value involved exceeding 154 min. RMB yuan, involving many internationally well-known trademarks such as "PHILIPS", "LV" etc., and well-known domestic brands such as "Butterfly", "White Elephant", "Diamond" etc.. In 2005, Shanghai Customs Office discovered a total of 150 infringement cases of various categories with the value involved exceeding 45 million. RMB yuan, and the cases involving commodities such as color TV, cars, tractors, scanners, table drills, transistors, etc. accounted for nearly 50% of the total. In 2005, as high as 87% of the infringement cases was discovered by the staff of the Shanghai Customs Office in the check on their own initiative.
In 2005, Shanghai Customs Office carried out activities of "Intellectual Property Customs Protection Practice Day"jointly with the EU customs intellectual property right expert delegation, exchanging their views on intellectual property protection by means of risk management; and studied with British customs intellectual property right protection experts practical issues such as share of information and the contents of technical training in risk management, and reached initial consensus.
In early 2005, the Shanghai Customs Office ranked first in the survey of 41 customs offices by means of written questions and answers on intellectual property right conducted by the General Administration of Customs and Quality Brands Protection Committee of the China Association of Foreign-invested Enterprises.
