Singapore employment expanded by 28,500 in the third quarter of this year, more than double the number of 14,100 recorded in the corresponding quarter of last year, according to the figures released by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM)on Thursday.
"Employment has turned in another quarter of healthy gains, reflecting the continuing strength in the economy. Looking ahead, the employment expansion is likely to be sustained for the rest of the year, supported by the year-end festivities," the MOM said in a statement.
Some 18,500 workers found jobs in the services sector in the third quarter, comprising the bulk of the employment growth, while the employment gains for the manufacturing and construction sectors were 8,100 and 2,200 respectively in the same period.
Overall employment rose by 78,000 in the first nine months of this year, surpassing the 71,400 job opportunities gained during the whole of last year.
The overall unemployment rate dropped sharply to 2.9 percent in September from 4.3 percent three months ago as more of this year's tertiary graduates found jobs. An estimated 69,400 residents stayed unemployed in September this year.
The figures also showed that some 2,810 workers were retrenched in the third quarter of this year while 64 percent of local people who had been retrenched in the second quarter were re-employed by September.
