The Nestlé Group’s headquarters is in Switzerland, and is he biggest food company of the world. The origins of the Group date back to 1866. That was the beginning of the company that Henri Nestlé founded in Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Geneva.

Mr. Nestlé is a German, and his name means “little nest” in German. Both his name and his symbol of the Nestlé continue to be used today on all Nestlé products as the corporate logo. Not only does the Nestlé refer to the founder’s name, but also symbolizes security, warmth, mother’s care, nature and nutrition. Today, Nestlé continues to believe in its founder’s beliefs and principles and is therefore very much people and product-oriented, committed to understanding its consumers’ needs throughout the world and how Nestlé might best service and appeal to all life stages, life styles and cultures.

In 2003, the total sales amount of the Group was about 88 billion Swiss Francs (542 billion Yuan), the net profit is 6,200 million Swiss Francs (38 billion Yuan), and is operating 511 factories in 86 countries, its global staff's number is about 253,000, and shareholders from various countries exceeds 250,000. Nestlé is world’s biggest manufacturer in the field of instant coffee, chocolate and candy, milk powder and condensed milk, nutriment for babies, mineral water, Granulated Chicken Bouillon and flavoring, freezing and prefabricated food, and food for pet.

Development and Investment in China

Nestlé has a long-established presence in China, and was one of the first leading international companies to enter the Chinese market in a fully committed way. Over one century, Chinese consumers have already known well and believed in brand of Nestlé. In 1908 of the beginning of this century, Nestlé set up its first sales office in Shanghai China. In the early 1980s, Nestlé already entered negotiations with the Chinese authorities to invest in the establishment of local production centers and to transfer its immense world’s best know-how and expertise in nutrition and food processing to China. The first of many Nestlé joint ventures in China started its local production in 1990. Over the past 14 years, Nestlé’s direct investment of China from Switzerland has already added up to about 7 billion Yuan, and is operating 20 factories in China.

In 2003, the annual sales amount in China of Nestle was up to 9,400 million Yuan, taxation paid every year is about 900 million Yuan, and have offered the employment opportunity to about 10,500 people.

There is a basic research center of Nestlé in Lausanne of Switzerland, in addition, there are 16 food R&D centers and technique center of the products all over  the world, nearly 1,200 million Swiss Francs of input in researching and developing every year (equal to 7,400 million Yuan), number of people in researching and developing reaching 3500. Through innovating and improving constantly, Nestlé meets consumers’ demand of nutrition and healthy, and has met the expectations to food of delicious, quality and security as well.

The friendly connections between Nestlé and Shanghai are of long standing and well established, since Nestlé has set up the first sales office in China in 1908, there is history of nearly one century on this land. At the end of 2003, the total investment in the above 8 companies of Nestlé is 10,400 million Yuan, and number of employee is about 2000.

The Nestlé, government of Shanghai and people have been keeping the friendly relation all the time. There is a top management team including group's CEO or the executive vice president of Nestlé to visit Shanghai almost every year. In 2001, the 49th thematic seminar of nutrition of Nestlé was held in Shanghai. And in September 2002, Nestlé global group’s annual directors’ meeting is held in Shanghai, group's directors and senior executives had a kind and friendly talk with Mr. Chen Liangyu, secretary of Municipal Committee of the CPC of Shanghai. 2004’s Nestlé market directors’ meeting of Asia and Pacific area was also held in Shanghai. Vigorous vital force here has left a lasting and profound impression to the group's directors and top management team.
