Delphi Shanghai Dynamics and Propulsion Systems Co., Ltd. (DSDPSC) is exclusively invested by US Delphi Automobile System Inc., which is the largest supplier of automobile components in the world. Established in March, 1997, with gross investment of 29 million US dollars, DSDPSC mainly develops and manufactures electronic gasoline spray injection systems for engine, chassis, steering systems, and brake systems. The automotive drum brake device is exported to Europe and North America in a great number, adopted by Opel in Europe, and GM Pick-up in US. The brake pumps are exported to North America in great amount. Besides, DSDPSC supplies components of steering and brake systems to Buick and Sail of GM Shanghai.

With guide and support of relative departments in municipal government, Pudong New District, and Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone, as well as the efforts by all of the employees, DSDPSC achieved gross sales of 899 million RMB in 2003, increased by 90% compared with that of 2002. As for export of products, due to active expansion in European and American markets, the export sales in 2003 reached 35.8 million US dollars, increased by 28.5% compared with that of 2002. The accumulative total number of drum brake device exported is about 10 million. All of the remarkable achievement is attributed to the advantageous conditions in Shanghai, and the collective efforts of company administrative work and groups. Especially, our company develops unique conceptions and measures in ensuring the quality of products, the researching and developing of new products and technology, talents training and strengthening administration, which provides powerful motivity to the advancement of company.

Perfecting quality system, ensuring clients’ satisfaction

The administrative level paid great attention to quality of products, implemented the enterprise policy “ensuring clients’ satisfaction and exceeding clients’ request”, and formulated 35 sets of regulations, such as TS16949 Program File, according to related standard and the situation of our company. We keep in our memory an incident that, in the initial stage of our company’s trial manufacture, a client from Germany, who was a quality inspector, half jokingly and half seriously, told Mr. Zhang Shuguo, our first general manager, that “You’d better not mix roast Beijing ducks with live chickens or ducks in containers,” after he walked around our workshop censoriously. Mr. Zhang took his words as a western joke and returned a meaningful smile. Seven years passed. That German client has become the fixed bargainee of our company, who continuously sent his order forms to Delphi. Delphi made its success. In the past several years, all of our employees’ concerted efforts have made the quality of our products on the top rank in the world. The PPM of our products is 4 ~ 6; our products have passed the examination of TS16949 for 7 times consecutively. Our company was honored with “The Best Supplier” by Opel Company, one of the largest automobile manufacturers in Europe, and “Excellent Supplier in 2003” by General Motors Shanghai.

Researching and developing new products and new technology

To satisfy the demand for environment protection high-efficiency brake devices in European market, DSDPSC put in great amount of efforts into developing new products, such as S-car ABS drum brake device, Sub-S U-structured drum brake device, etc.

Especially, in 2003, US Delphi Inc. announced to invest 12 million dollars into produce Multec Direct Injection Gasoline Spray Stratified Injector 3.0/3.5, the most advanced fuel injector at present. That showed Delphi’s confidence in Delphi’s increasing presence in the market of China, and also marked that DSDPSC began to transfer into the high-tech, high added-value manufacture with US Delphi’s authorization.

The Delphi Multec 3.0/3.5 by DSDPSC is a solenoid-actuated and controlled injector that will provide spray-guided performance for stratified lean combustion at a lower cost. It is a significant advancement over wall-guided lean direct injection systems. It is being designed to help lower fuel consumption and reduce CO, emissions. It will also help manufactures more easily meet tailpipe emissions standards. All the equipment involved in the production, assemblage, and testing is precisely debugged, so that the allowed error in the adjustment and test of fuel injector is within 0.001mm. Each product, strictly tested and examined before its entry into market, can meet the rigorous request by emission control regulations and help automotive engine work most efficiently.

The manufacture of fuel injectors requires not only the precise equipment and clean workshops, but also a number of engineers and technicians, who can guarantee the smooth implementation of projects. Every aspect related to new products, i.e., the examination and approval of projects, formulating of regulations for equipment, purchase, checking, accepting fixing, debugging of equipment, and production of sample products is supported by project staff, engineers, and technicians from the headquarter of Delphi Inc., which marked DSDPSC’s transformation from labor-intensive industrial business to technology-intensive industrial business.

Highlighting conception of “people oriented”, actively training talents

Ever since its establishment in 1997, every leader of the company, including president, Dr. Zhang Shuguo, general manager Mr. Xu Pengling, adheres to the “people-oriented” conception and regards employees the treasure of company. They bring employees’ creativity into full play, show great respect to them, especially those operation workers and connect the fortune of the company closely to employees.

They said that, “It is our employees’ diligence and wisdom that produces excellent automobile components to meet the demand of clients all over the world, which enables the existence and development of our company. Without them, the existence of all the administrative stall would be meaningless”. The construction of our company’s team and group, as well as the improvement of working environment, is centered with “people-oriented” conception and “exceeding clients’ demand.”

As for training talents, DSDPSC appoints employees to receive training in the professional training bases established by Delphi parent company in Qsinghua University, Tongji University according to training plans; meanwhile, DSDPSC opens up 20 courses each year for employees to select and attend, including the interesting “Delphi Team” training, which spreads the enterprise culture to every employee by game playing. Besides, DSDPSC put our kinds of latest training courses to satisfy the need of employees on different levels, such as “perfecting production”, “situational leadership” and “highly efficient team.” The production department put out multi-technique position training each year; the multi-technique rate ranges from 157% to 800%. In the end of each year, the company estimates the effectiveness of that year’s training in accordance with employees’ performance and development in their work. The company spends a large amount of money every year on the training of employees and provides opportunities for both administrative staff and operation employees to study for MBA or MPA. So far, 13 of the technology administrative staff have received such training. This year, our company invited a world famous consulting company to design a set of “administration skills” courses according to the company’s situation and invited experienced professors to give lessons, the whole expense of which was about 30,000 US dollars. DSDPSC succeeded in improving employees’ quality and cohesion of the enterprise team by trainings of different levels.
