College students. They are young and have bachelor's degree. Why cannot they find a job? Students who have just graduated usually lack of working experience. With admission expansion of more and more colleges growing every year, the demand and supply of human resources are changing. The government and people from all walks of life concern with the employment problem of the youth. Zhu Junyi, the director of Shanghai Labor and Social Security Division, said, "the government should build a 'bridge' for the youth to accumulate increase working experience." Shanghai Youth Intern Program is such a "bridge". One end of the bridge is those who are urgent to improve their vocational skills, to accumulate working experience and establish a right career attitude; the other end of the bridge is the enterprise with advanced industrial technology, excellent culture and high social responsibility. iUniverse Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd (abbreviated as SHIU), as a foreign enterprise and among the first group of excellent intern bases in Shanghai, are now bravely undertaking social responsibility and implementing the social obligation to be a good Shanghai "enterprise citizen". The company has inherited the management mode of the American hi-tech enterprise and the good enterprise culture. SHIU established an excellent team of Chinese native human resources specialized in software research and development, client service, quality control and graphic design. The company holds the following as the management ideal: customer first, behavior upright, and passion most. We have been advocating highly effective team work for all these years, and we are concerned with vocational skills of the employees, and support the employees to grow together with the enterprise. As a company in pursuit of advanced technology, the company has got adequate recognition of government authority, and then got the national key software enterprise and Shanghai hi-tech enterprise recognition. In recent years, SHIU has been upgrading and improving progressively in the two hi-tech products of business website establishment and digital content shift which include XML Publishing System, Content Distribution Suites and Product Order E-commerce System. Our products such as software and networks have won high recognition of oversea clients. The hi-tech products exported abroad have earned foreign currency as much as ten million dollars. As an enterprise with far sight and excellent insight, SHIU has established good cooperation with several famous colleges and publishing house in China to promote the Chinese Digital publishing progress. SHIU established an enterprise scholarship in universities such as Huadong Normal University and Shanghai transportation university, including: iUniverse Excellent Teacher Reward, iUniverse Excellent college student Scholarship/Stipend, to give honor to college teaching staff for their hard work and to encourage the students to work diligently in order to support the development of educational course in China and effectively promote technology communication and cooperation of the enterprise and academic public. As an enterprise with sense of responsibility, early in 2002 the company took part in the vocation intern project of Shanghai government. The company fully understood that intern is an effective means to sharpen the competitive edge of youth and the project will do good to people. The company also recognized that it was a great honor as well as a commitment to the society to be the intern base. Therefore, the company used its advanced technology, and healthy culture, and specialized human resource to the most to design a regular intern management agenda and explore working resources for the intern plan. The company has promised the intern students that, “we hope that what you have got is not merely an intern position, but also experience of confidence, dedication, and enterprising motivation.” Until the end of 2003, in SHIU, about 81% students have acquired internship at professional technical posts, and 31% of them are recruited as employees of SHIU. 100% of our students graduated get employed in society. The fruitful result of SHIU intern project cannot be separated with the entire support of the high officials in SHIU. It has already become an important agenda of the general manager's routine meeting to report the development of the intern project. It is also a routine for the high officials from the USA to have face to face communication with intern students in their visit to China. Besides the concern and the support of the high officials, the intern students in SHIU have many touching stories with the teachers in their growing. The application of the digital XML publishing system is a position with high technology requirement. In order to help the student to learn more technical skills in the limited intern period, the digital editing system department assigned their excellent workers to teach the students individually. Most of the workers and instructors patiently explain and demonstrate to the students no matter when they have their own task or not. Once there was a student who fell ill, and an instructor helped him to catch up after work until he passed the technology recognition of the company. The growing of the students is filled with the diligent work of the instructors, and it has already become highlight of the enterprise culture to help others and love the work. SHIU has been trying to help students to accumulate as much practical working skills as possible, and build a good working attitude in order to sharpen their career competitive edge. One instructor found that a student named Wendy was lack of working experience but good at thinking and researching, so he encouraged her to accumulate her experience and conclude her findings. Under the instruction of a professional, she worked out a management method of the office suite. The company named the suite after her, and compiled her method into the training handbook for the new students. The intern students in SHIU have become a partner for SHIU while they are learning knowledge. On the November 30th 2002, in the intern base show organized by the government, two intern students represented SHIU to tell their own experience in SHIU. Their story with deep feeling inside moved everyone at present and they learned confidence from the presentation, finally successfully passing the technology recognition and the training of the professional skills. They were later formally employed by SHIU. The down-to-earth work of SHIU was rewarded by the healthy development of the students and their trust and respect for SHIU. They expressed their love for such a group in their own way. In the annual get-together of the company, students write in Chinese calligraphy “We are growing together with SHIU” with a moc but and gave it to the CEO at present in his visit to China. SHIU makes the students to realize their own value and responsibility to the society, to the enterprise and to their owe family. At the same time, from their effort, we can see what implication intern has for the stability of the society, development of the enterprise and growing of the student. Zhu Junyi, the director of Shanghai Labour and Social Security Division, commented on SHIU's intern project, “SHIU is not a big hi-tech company, but a small company does not necessarily mean weakness. Enterprises among the top 500 in the world only provide a limited number of positions. In whatever country and whatever city, the small and medium sized enterprises absorb the majority of the youth labor. We hope more and more companies which have new technology and management mode could come to take part in the intern project of the youth. SHIU is not only dedicating their intellect and passion for the intern students. As a fast developing foreign-invested company in Shanghai, they are contributing significantly to the family of the students, the colleges, the city and the government. “ Written by Yangjun iUniverse Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd HR Manager Attached: Pictures Picture 1: CEO in his visit to China and the General Manager are together with the students Picture 2: The General Manager Mr. Vernon Stinebaker are talking friendly with the director of Shanghai Labour and Social Security Division.
