Amkor Assembly & Test (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (Amkor Shanghai) is a wholly foreign-owned enterprise established in Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone, Shanghai, by Amkor Technology Inc. of the United States, in March 2001. With a total investment of US $170 million and a registered capital of US $59 million, Amkor Shanghai has a staff of 1,066 and specializes in IC (integrate circuit) packaging, testing, and processing. As a foreign-owned enterprise with advanced technology in the industry of IC production, Amkor Shanghai also enjoys preferential policy given by the Chinese government. Meanwhile, it is the managing unit of the Shanghai Guild of Integrate Circuit Industry and the deputy-directing unit of the Assembly & Test Committee. Mr. JEFF DRYJANSKI, CEO of Amkor Shanghai, holds the position of the managing director of the Association of Foreign-Invested Enterprises in Shanghai.

Its parent company, Amkor Technology Inc., is a Nasdaq-listing company founded in 1968. As a leading company in the industry of outsourcing semiconductor assembly and test, Amkor Technology has a global staff of 22,000 and its R&D bases in the United States, South Korea and Philippine, etc. It also has 17 plants all over the world, all of which have passed the standards of ISO 9002, QS 9000, and ISO 14001. Amkor Technology maintains good business relationship with more than 250 well-known electronics companies and provides them with some 850 kinds of IC assembly and test services in different forms and of different specifications. The sales revenue of Amkor Technology reached US $1.6 billion in 2003.

Early in 2001, Amkor Technology strategically invested in Shanghai, China, where the information industry began to develop by leaps and bounds just before entring into WTO. Since then, an upsurge of investment in high-tech industries has been ushered into China with the entry of a great number of multi-national corporations, especially IT companies. And Shanghai has become the city with the best investment environment and the soundest policy system in China. Being one of the world’s biggest suppliers of outsourcing assembly and test, Amkor Technology considers entering Shanghai a critical strategy in the company’s long-run development. With its 30-years’ experience and advanced technology in the semiconductor industry, Amkor Technology began to tap the largest marketplace of the world today by making an initial investment of US $36 million (US $12 million of registered capital) in Pudong, Shanghai. Thanks to the efforts of its staff, Amkor Shanghai completed the construction and electrification of the 1,000 m2 clean room facility within only several months and finished all its infrastructure constructions. After the fitment and equipment test, the new plant began its trial production in May 2001, and passed the corporation’s trial product test at the highest level in the following month. Amkor Shanghai received lots of support from Shanghai municipal government during the very beginning stage, therefore, its investment confidence has been greatly enhanced.

Amkor Shanghai has gained a strong competitiveness in its field through integrating the resources of staff, management and equipment. Mr. Jeff Dryjanski, the CEO of Amkor Shanghai, has been working in the IC industry for 35 years. Other managerial staffs all have a job experience of more than 10 years in the relative fields. Great importance has always been attached to technical training in Amkor Shanghai. In the first year since the company’s establishment, more than 60 Chinese employers were sent for technical training to South Korea, Philippine and the US. Meanwhile, more and more top overseas technicians have been invited to China to give training lessons on the spot.        Amkor Shanghai creates a good many chances for its staff’s study and promotion, and a lot of local intellects are making great contribution to the enterprise.  Not only equipped with the advanced manufacturing facilities introduced from Japan, Korea and the US, the company also keeps optimizing its production processes and rationalizing the equipment layout. Though it has only been founded for 3 years, Amkor Shanghai increased its capital for equipment purchasing to expand its production capacity both in 2002 and in 2004. It has also been using the advanced management software systems such as Oracle and MESA. Backed with the Internet Technical Parameter Checking Systems at the Amkor headquarter, Amkor’s plants all over the world can together share the latest technologies and experiences to improve their own production.   The unqualified products of Amkor Shanghai is 50 ppm (50 poor products per million) on average, namely, the qualification rate is as high as 99.8%. Besides ISO 14001 environmental management standards, Amkor Shanghai also passed the quality system standards of ISO9002 and QS9000.

Amkor Shanghai has always been strictly abiding by the laws and regulations of China. Its strong growth and superb operation has won the favor of the customs and municipal government of Shanghai. The city mayor and vice mayors of the city have met Mr. John Boruch, Amkor’s vice chairman of the board, in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Mr. Yu Zhongyu, the deputy director of Electronic Science and Technology Office, Ministry of Information Industry, has also visited the company. Amkor Shanghai also enjoys some preferential certificates from Shanghai Customs for import-and –export declaring at the customs, which enables it to declare its import and export businesses via EDI paperless declaring system, cutting short the import and export period.  In October 2003, Amkor Shanghai was awarded the AA Unit in the credit rating by Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Bureau. The company is dedicated to the development of IT industry in Shanghai by making suggestions to the governments and Pudong New Area, and attracting other world-famous companies to this growing hub of technology in China.

With its unrelenting effort, Amkor Shanghai has gained a strong development momentum. In 2003, the second year of batch production of Amkor Shanghai, the company’s exporting products amounted to US $34 million, and miraculously made sheer profits in the fourth quarter of the year. Its performance in this year is even more exciting. The exports of Amkor Shanghai in the first six months of this year has reached some US $ 90 million, with a year-on-year growth of 432%. And the exports of the whole year is expected to approach US$200 million. Impressed by the outstanding performance of Amkor Shanghai, the head quarter of Amkor Technology made a capital increase of US $ 105 million in April 2004 in addition to the one of US $36 million made in 2002 (the accumulative total investment is US $ 177 million and the registered capital reaches US$59 million) for Amkor Shanghai’s expansion. In May 2004, Amkor Shanghai announced its purchasing the 88,000 m2 workshop from IBM and the long-term strategic cooperation agreement between the two companies. Amkor Technology is fully committed to the growth in Shanghai and plans to build Amkor Shanghai into a key contributor of IC assembly and test with the strongest competitiveness in China.

Amkor Shanghai is confident that it will embrace a brighter future with the stability of China and the favorable environment in Shanghai. It will always dedicate itself to the development of IC industry in China and make its due contribution to the modernization of this country.
