Shanghai lies in the central region of China’s Pacific coast, and is the largest city in the economically flourishing Yangtze River Delta. The delta region, comprising 15 cities, covers 1% of China’s land area and is home to 6.1% of its population, but accounts for nearly 1/4 of the GNP, 1/2 of foreign direct investment, and 1/3 of import and export trade volume. The Yangtze River Delta with Shanghai as its nucleus is making efforts to become the 6th largest world metropolitan area.
